Positive thoughts at holiday season
The holiday season does cause all of us involved with The Lincoln Journal and the world of sports to pause and give thought to all that is good and right about our county, state and nation. While Americans will be among the first to criticize their leaders and the good, old USA, it is sort of like the comments we often read about family. It is okay for "us" to say something negative about our sisters, moms and dads, but don't let anyone else try for fear of facing the wrath of an irate brother, son or daughter.

CHUBBY NELSON prepares to inbound the ball for the Lincoln County Panthers. Nelson injured his knee in the fourth quarter of the Nitro game.
HAMLIN -- Mountain State Athletic Conference (MSAC) basketball came to Hamlin Tuesday, December 19, and the Nitro Wildcats left town with a 68-53 victory.
The host Lincoln County High School Panthers kept the game close after falling behind by nine at the end of the first quarter. But, in the end, they fell to their third straight loss to start their inaugural season.
The Panthers were handicapped in this game due to the illness of tall man Taylor Dunlap.
Nitro jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first period but cut the margin to 30-26 at the half.
The teams split the third period, 17-17, before Nitro earned the victory with a 21-10 fourth canto.
Chubby Nelson led the Lincoln County scoring, with 16 points. James Bias added ten; Greg Parkins, eight; Rusty Johnson, seven; Taylor Rotherham, six; and Dunlap, Grant Adkins and Ian Handy, two each for the Panthers.
Chase Pickering scored 17 points to lead Nitro. Brett McClanahan added 16 and John Dorchinez tossed in 12 for the Wildcats.
Greenbrier East-56; LC-52
Lincoln County High Head Boys Basketball Coach Bill Elkins has often said the job of the coaching staff is to get the team “into a position to win.” They did just that, Thursday, December 21, but Greenbrier East left Hamlin with a hard-fought 56-52 win.
Greenbrier East broke out to a 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Lincoln County battled back to cut the margin to 33-27 at the half.
The Panther whittled further into the lead with a 12-9 third quarter margin that made it 42-39. They battled to a 13-13 deadlock in the final frame to account for the margin.
The Panthers played the game without the services of Chubby Nelson, who injured his knee in the fourth quarter of the Nitro game.
Dunlap, returning to good health after his brief illness, led the Panther scoring with 15 points. Johnson added 11; James Bias and Adkins, eight each; Handy, four; and Cooper, Rotherham and Parkins, two each for Lincoln County.

George Washington rushed out to a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, and held a 27-19 margin at halftime. The Panthers of Coach Kim Lovejoy-Clayton took the third period, 14-12, before falling in the final frame, 16-13.

Lady Indians fall to East Hardy, 55-52, in championship game of Tip-Off Classic
Both Berkeley Springs and East Hardy advanced to the finals of Eddie's Tire Service Tip-Off Classic at Berkeley Springs High School with easy wins on Friday, December 15. East Hardy disposed of the Paw Paw 69-33, while the Indians downed the Maryland School for the Deaf 59-26, setting up a showdown in the finals by two teams ranked in their respective classifications by WVRSN.com. East Hardy was ranked fifth in the latest Class A poll, while Berkeley Springs was the eighth rated team in Class AA.
The two teams also met in last year’s championship game, with Amber Booher putting back a shot at the buzzer to give Berkeley Springs a 49-47 victory. But there would be no late-game heroics from the Indians this year, as East Hardy built their biggest lead of the game 53-47, with just under three minutes remaining and then held on for the 55-52 win.
The Indians had their chances, cutting the Cougar lead to 53-52 with less than 30 seconds left in the game. Berkeley Springs applied full-court pressure on the ensuing East Hardy possession but their Class A opponent was able to get the ball into the forecourt, forcing the Tribe to commit a foul. Molly Look made one of two free throws, giving East Hardy a 54-52 lead with 11.7 seconds remaining.
Alex Tamez took the inbounds pass and raced the ball up court before passing to Rebecca Trump, who drove the baseline, but her shot was off the mark and East Hardy escaped with the hard-fought win.
The game looked like it would be a high scoing affair, as both teams scored almost at will in the first quarter, with the Indians taking a 21-17 lead into the game's second eight minutes of play.
Tamez and Trump had the hot hands for Berkeley Springs, scoring 14 of the 21 first-quarter points.
Tamez didn't cool off in the second quarter, scoring seven more points, to lead the Indians to a 32-32 tie at the half.
"Alex really played well tonight," McCumbee said. “She had 14 points for us in the first half. She did a nice job of running the offense from the point and shot the ball well."
East Hardy quickly jumped out to a 38-32 lead after the intermission, before a three-point shot from Trump, a two-point bucket from Kayla Hill and another basket by Trump put the Indians on top 39-38 midway through the third quarter.
The two teams traded baskets for the final four minutes of the quarter, before East Hardy scored the final field goal to take a 45-43 lead into the game’s final eight minutes of action.
Berkeley Springs tied the game 47-47, with 5:45 remaining in the quarter, before East Hardy went on a 6-0 run for the 53-47 lead. The Indians fought back valiantly, but couldn't quite catch the Cougars in the end.
"We did some good things in this game," McCumbee said. “But, we didn't play well enough on defense and did not block out well. Those two things cost us the game. We are small and we are going to have to be perfectionists at blocking out in order to succeed. We didn't do that in this game and East Hardy took advantage with too many second and third chances. And, the defense just wasn't up to par. They had their moments, but for the most part it wasn't as good as we would like it. We can't expect to beat the better teams on our schedule with as many defensive breakdowns as we had tonight."
Tamez and Trump led the Indian offense with 16 points each. Sarah Risinger and Ashley Hovermale added eight points apiece, while Kayla Hill and Kelsey McCoy rounded out the scoring with two points each.
Tamez, Trump and Hovermale were named to the all-tournament team.
Fallon Fansler and Holly Wilkins led East Hardy with 20 and 15 points, respectively
On Friday, December 15, against the Maryland School for the Deaf, Berkeley Springs raced out to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter of action and rode that early momentum to a 59-26 victory.
The Indians stretched their lead to 16-points, 29-13 at the end of two quarters, before putting the game away in the second half.
Tamez led all scorers with 16 points. Amber Booher added 14, Ashley Hovermale nine, Hill eight, Trump six, while Courtney Kesecker, Kelsey McCoy and Sarah Risinger scored two points apiece.
Tandy Lewis led the Maryland School for the Deaf with five points.
In the consolation game, the Maryland School for the Deaf defeated Paw Paw in a high-scoring contest 70-58.
Brittany Kerns from Paw Paw, who was selected to the all-tournament team, led all scorers with 32 points.
Rachel Benedict led the Orioles with 29 points, while teammate Andrea Amati added 24.
Berkeley Springs, now 3-2 on the year, will play at Frankfort this Friday, December 22, before taking part in the Rotary Holiday Tournament in Hancock on December 29 and 30.

WAYNE - On the second day of the Wayne Holiday Tournament Friday night, two very unlikely but very familiar foes met for the first time in years.
Just a trip down Route 2 is all that separates Mason County teams Point Pleasant (1-5) and Hannan (1-5), but it took a trip to Wayne for the two teams to meet on the same court as the Black Knights took a 74-51 victory to claim third place at the Wayne tournament in the consolation game.
Point Pleasant jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and never looked back, taking an 18-9 lead after one quarter and holding a 40-23 lead at the half. The Black Knights were able to pull away early thanks to the best shooting effort the team has had all year.
With very unselfish play and good ball movement, PPHS was able to extend that lead slowly over the final 16 minutes, scoring 20 points in the third quarter and 15 in the fourth, while the Wildcats added 14 in both second half quarters.
Hannan was limited in size and depth, but fought hard to keep the game in check, but could not do anything with Point and its first superior shooting night of the season.
Steven Perry led the Black Knights with 17 points, four rebounds and four steals while big man Tyson Jones posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
|
Will Slone, who was selected to the all tournament team, had 16 points and six rebounds in the win and was followed by Jay Ellis and Jeremy Legg with four points and four rebounds apiece, B.J. Lloyd with six points, Trasawn Bonecutter with four points and four boards and Chris Campbell with three points.
Point Pleasant also limited itself to just 10 turnovers and outrebounded the Wildcats 37-28 in the game.
Hannan was paced by Ryan Canterbury who had a game high 23 points and was followed by Kevin Blake and Jason Bennett with eight points each, Shawn Plants and Patrick Flora with three points apiece and Jered Taylor, Travis Bowman and Christian Estep with two points each.
In the championship tilt, Clay County took the title from home team Wayne 67-57 following the Point Pleasant win.

The Black Knights will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Poca while Hannan prepares to meet Wahama next Friday in Mason.

MASON - The Wahama White Falcon basketball team rallied from behind to claim an exciting 59-56 cage win over cross-river rival Meigs Friday evening before an overflow, standing room only crowd at the Bend Area campus.
Casey Harrison and Brenton Clark ignited a third quarter comeback rally for the White Falcons with Jordan Smith coming on to score 13 of his 15 points in the final period to lead the White Falcons to the hardwood triumph. Smith dropped in a three point goal with just over a minute remaining to cap the Falcons come-from-behind effort with Kevin Wasonga converting three of four free throws at a critical time in the waning minutes to help Wahama to the home victory.
Harrison finished the evening with a game high 19 points while Clark and Smith collected 15 tallies each for coach James Toth's cagers. The Win lifted the Mason County teams record to 5-2 on the season while Meigs dropped to 1-7 following the heartbreaking setback.
The emotionally packed contest went right down to the final second with Wahama clinging to a one point edge when a charging foul on Dave Poole negated a potential game winning Marauder basket with less than :01 to play. The last second goal was waved off due to the foul call, erupting the White Falcon crowd and leaving Meigs wanting answers, while Wahama took possession of the basketball.
During the confusion that erupted following the charge call, Meigs was called on a technical foul and Wahama went to the line, sinking both shots and sealing the three-point White Falcon victory.
“Once again we got off to a slow start but fortunately we were able to step it up a notch in the fourth quarter,” Falcon coach James Toth said following the hotly contested outing. “We trailed until the final period and received some outstanding play down the stretch to pull this one out.”
|
Meigs jumped in front behind the scoring of Eric Tolar, Poole and Clay Bolin during the early going as the Marauders maintained an advantage throughout the first half of action. Meigs failed to capitalize on the White Falcons sluggish start however as Wahama stayed close enough to mount a charge over the final 16 minutes to pull out the win.
The Marauders led by seven, 13-6, at the close of the first eight minutes before allowing Wahama to trim the deficit to just four points at 23-19 at the conclusion of first half action. Harrison and Clark began to warm up offensively for the White Falcons with the opening of third quarter play with nine and eight points respectively in the stanza as WHS was able to close to within a basket at 42-40 going into the final canto. The fourth period belonged to Smith, a former Marauder cager prior to transferring to Wahama this year, with the junior forward taking over to score 13 of his 15 points on the night during the final eight minutes.
“Clark had a great game for us with 12 rebounds and 15 points with Smith and Harrison stepping their game up when we needed it,” Toth said. “Tolar played an exceptionally good game for Meigs as well added the WHS cage mentor.”
Tolar dropped in a team high total of 18 points for the Marauders with Poole adding 16 markers and Bolin nine for the visitors.

In the preliminary outing Meigs placed four players in double figure scoring to come away with a 62-54 win over the Wahama jayvee squad. Jeremy Smith led all scorers with 16 points followed by Damien Wise with 12, Jacob Well 11, and Corey Hutton with 11 for Meigs. Brandon Flowers notched 14 tallies for the lone Falcon in double digit scoring.
Wahama drops to 2-3 on the season following the loss while the Meigs junior varsity improves to 5-2.
WHS returns to action for a pair of games next week in the second and third dates of a five game home stand. Tuesday finds Buffalo visiting the Bend Area before Mason County rival Hannan visits on Friday. Tip-off times for both nights are 6 p.m. for junior varsity action and 7:30 p.m. for the main event.
