Golden Knights survive Class AA shootout

WELCH - After 48 minutes of fast-break football on a rain-slick Golden Knight Stadium, the 10th ranked Mount View High School, 6-2, pulled out a hard-fought 52-35 victory over the 5-4 and 11th ranked Logan High School Wildcats in a Class AA shoot-out.

After passing for three touchdowns, and eclipsing the previous single season touchdown record of 16 by Gary Stover that stood since 1979, Mount View's senior signal-caller, Adrian Thomas summed up the night in two words. “I'm tired,” Thomas said as a humble smile crept across his face. Thomas has 18 touchdown passes on the 2005 season.

Both teams wasted little time putting points on the board. Mount View scored with a minute and nine seconds gone in the game on a 31-yard run by Brandon Cunningham, but the Wildcats answered about a minute and a half later on a 35-yard pass from Justin Taylor to a wide-open C.B. Green. Logan posted another score as time expired in the first on a 3-yard run by Joey Carter, but Mount View answered with a pair of TDs in the second quarter on a 22-yard run by Cordero High at the 9:40 mark, and a 60-yard pass from Thomas to Antonio Horton with just 39 seconds left. Logan responded on the ensuing kick-off with Chris Tolliver returning Rapheal Cooper's kick 82-yards for a score with 27 seconds left in the half.

Mount View roared out of the gates in scoring on a long drive on a 33-yard Thomas to Cory Hale pass at the 5:46 mark, followed by Brandon Cunningham's second TD gallop, this one for 30 yards at the 3:33 mark in the third. Logan answered with a Taylor to Jordan Moore 10-yard pass with 41 ticks left in the third.

The Golden Knights continued their scoring ways in the start of the fourth on Thomas's third touchdown pass, a 9-yard toss to Hale, but Logan answered with a 1-yard Taylor sneak. The Wildcats tried an on-side kick, but High snatched it out of mid air and raced 48-yards untouched for a score.

William Hasty capped off the Knights' scoring with a 1-yard plunge with 58 seconds left in the game.

Mount View travels to Oak Hill next week.
