Highlander boys, girls claim MSAC titles

RIPLEY, W.Va. -- Huntington High School claimed two Mountain State Athletic Conference soccer championships Saturday at the Ripley High School field.

Huntington posted a 2-0 win against Parkersburg to win the girls' title outright. In the second match Huntington's boys and defending state champion Beckley tied, 1-1, and were declared MSAC co-champions. League officials moved the games to early in the day to help Huntington players return home in time for their Homecoming dance.

In game one, Huntington (14-4-1) took the lead when Thea Cooper scored against the stingy Big Reds' defense with 5:35 left in the opening half. Miko Alley scored off an assist from Aly Shattls to give the Highlanders an insurance goal with 31:33 remaining. Huntington keeper Sam Yocke had three saves to get the shutout.

Parkersburg (16-3-1) had its string of consecutive victories stopped at 15.

Huntington (8-3-7) also scored first in the boys game. After a scoreless first half, Huntington's Thorsten Kraski scored unassisted at 45:01. The Highlanders were four minutes away from a win when they were called for a penalty in the box. Beckley's Alex George converted on the penalty kick to even the score.
