Highlanders fall in semifinals

Highlanders fall in semifinals

SPRING VALLEY -- Huntington High School lost its grip on the girls' soccer state title in the mud Tuesday night at the Spring Valley Soccer Complex.

Parkersburg, with a little veteran leadership on a primarily young team, trumped Huntington's more experienced squad, 2-0, in the Region IV semifinals. The Big Reds (18-3-1) scored twice in the second half to end the Highlanders' quest for consecutive state championships.

The loss was tough to take for the Highlanders, a team with eight seniors that finished the season 16-4-1.

Huntington's senior class is the most decorated in the program's history. The group racked up win after win and has a stack of championship trophies, including last year's state title.

Coach Bob Hogsett said it's hard to believe the group is finished.
