Volleyball: WVU Downs Seton Hall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team defeated BIG EAST foe Seton Hall 3-1 (30-28, 18-30, 30-26, 30-26) on Sunday, Oct. 30, at the WVU Coliseum.

The Mountaineers (15-10, 3-7 BIG EAST) snapped its five-game conference losing streak with the victory. Senior Julie Hockenson led West Virginia with 17 kills, hitting .343 on the day. Senior Stephanie Zolna had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Junior Gina Cusanelli had a career-high 21 assists and added seven kills and 12 digs.

Game one was close until the Mountaineers used serves from Hockenson to go up 16-11. The Pirates fought back to take the lead at 19-20, but West Virginia prevailed with two key kills from Hockenson before going on to win 30-28.

In game two, Seton Hall (12-13, 2-7 BIG EAST) came out with force, rattling off five straight serves from Tricia Meyers to go up 5-0. Behind Meyers' serving and four kills of the game, Seton Hall went on to win 18-30.

Game three stayed close unitl West Virginia used two service aces from Hockenson and one from Zolna to go up 20-15. The Pirates fought back to come within one until Zolna had key kills to push the Mountaineers to a 30-26 victory.

Game four proved to be the last. West Virginia found themselves down 9-15 before fighting back with huge kills from Cusanelli to even the score 17-17. Cusanelli had 5 kills in game four as the Mountaineers went on to close out the match, winning 30-26.

Sophomore Kailee Goold had her 17th double-double of the season with 28 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Lisa Hough had eight kills, while sophomore Abby Tevis added six.

Jessica King led Seton Hall with 20 kills, while Brittany Rahrer had 45 assists and 19 digs.

West Virginia returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. when they host No. 7 Notre Dame.
