# 2 James Monroe Mavericks finish a Perfect Season at 10-0

Fairlea - Third-year coach David Witt and his No. 2 James Monroe Mavericks came back from being down 14-13 halftime score to win over Greenbrier East. “Greenbrier East is a big rival for the Mavericks and a large crowd on bog sides of the field proved this to be true.
The Mavericks now (10-0) are looking to see who their first round opponent will be for the first round of the AA Playoffs.
On offense, James Monroe is led by all-state senior Andrew Robertson, who is approaching the 1,000-yard mark on the year. He combined with teammate Jason Jackson for 264 yards in the 17-14 win over
But James Monroe certainly did not look past the struggling Spartans, even with the Class AA playoffs looming. Witt knew that Coach Grogg and his Spartans would love nothing more than to spoil JMHS' perfect season.
The Spartans' offense was keyed by quarterback Allen Level, a versatile passer and runner. Tommy Mutter and Bryan Calhoun paced the steady ground attack

Tommy Mutter was one that gave them big trouble every time he touched the ball.
With Level at QB leading the charge, East battered at the Mavericks defensive line with two runs by Jermaine Allen and a pass from Level to Torrey Nally which was incomplete so the Spartans had to put.
The Mavericks started off with three straight runs by Jason Jackson runs for 2 13 and then a 59 yard touchdown run 9:39 left in the 1st quarter of play. Dalton Pritt lined up for the PAT but with a flag on the Spartans they then went for the 2 pt. conversion by Andrew Robertson which failed.
East then went three and out again then punted to the Mavericks who in turn did the same.
East then with 6:09 left in the quarter started an 8 play drive in which Mutter 23 yards rushing on 5 carries. Level then two plays later failed on a pass to Tye Allen.

Then with only 8 seconds ticking off the clock Jason Jackson ran in for a 23 yard touchdown. Pritt then chopped in the PAT to bring the score to 13-0.
Eat then began a Spartan march to their end zone on a 12 plays which started on their own 25 yard line with 7 carries for 58 yard by Tommy Mutter with also on three carries for 17 yards by Jermaine Allen .Mutter scored on a five yard scamper and Carrington Bryant converted the PAT to bring the score to 13-7 with 7:11 left until halftime.
Once again the Mavericks started off with good field position having the ball on East’s 47 yard line.
Then on 12 plays they moved the ball to the Spartans 18 yard line with rushing yardage lead by Jason and Andrew Robertson again’ Jason had 3 carries for 21 yards and Andrew 5 for 24 yards. Two flags were thrown on both sides so the Mavericks brought in Dalton Pritt to attempt a 24 yard FG with
The FG was blocked by East and Dexter Johnson returned the ball 76 yards for a TD.
Carrington Bryant converted the PAT again to bring the score to 14-13 in favor of the Spartans.

A strand start bought on the 3rd quarter of play with a delay of game against the Spartans.
It was homecoming and the Mavericks were on the sidelines with Caption Mark Boggess ready with no Spartans in site.
This proved to fall in the Mavericks favor to start off the 2nd half with Carrington Bryant kicking off to Ernie Tincher who brought the ball to East’s 46 yard line.
James Monroe used 7 plays lead once again by Jackson and Robertson with Andrew having 34 yards and Jason 12.
Andrew Robertson scored on a 1 yard run and also punched in the 2 pt. conversion to bring the score to 21-14 with
East then went 3 and out and had to punt to Heath Mullins who ran it back for a TD but was called back on a clipping flag.
James Monroe then turned the ball over on downs and East started on their own 34 yard line with
Tommy Mutter started off with a 10 yard run then one for 8 yards. Then on 4th down East went to punt but pulled off the fake with Level taking the ball to pass to Tye Allen which was intercepted by Zach Mann.
Jason Jackson then took the ball on his second carry of the drive and scampered for a 35 yard touchdown run and Pritt was good on the PAT which brought the score to 28-14 with
East then tried to move the ball with runs by Mutter and Jacob Coleman .Allen Level tried to passes but both were for naught and East had to punt the ball away and Jason Jackson ran the ball for 5 yards to run the clock out in the 3rd quarter of play.
James Monroe started out the final quarter of play on their 45 yard line.
After four rushes and a flag the Mavericks had to punt.
East then started out on their 7 yard line and after nine plays in which Mutter and J. Coleman was the go to guys turned the ball over on downs with

“It really was a fantastic ballgame,” Witt said. “It was the type of game that's fun to participate in, it was fun for everybody in the stands watching it, and it was one of those games with a playoff atmosphere (and) a lot of importance on the outcome.”
Witt added, “Those are the ones you work hard for and look forward to playing in.”

The victory did leave us where we're at this week (ranked second),” Witt said. “That assures you home playoff games as long as you're fortunate enough to keep winning.
“You're always better off playing at home rather than traveling all over the place to play these games.”
