Seven WVC Players Earn All-American Honors

Seven football players from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference were named to Division II All-American teams by the Hansen’s Football Gazette.

Harlon Hill Trophy winning quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger from East Stroudsburg University and Gene Upshaw Award winning defensive end Mike McFadden from Grand Valley State University headline a talented 2005 Don Hansen’s Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-America team.

Grand Valley State’s Chuck Martin, who led the Lakers to an unblemished 13-0 record and the school’s third NCAA Division II National Championship in the last for seasons, was named the National Coach of the Year. Martin earned his first national title as head coach at GVSU after previously serving as defensive coordinator on GVSU’s 2003 championship squad.

Terwilliger and Bloomsburg University running back Jamar Brittingham shared Offensive Back of the Year honors. Richie Ross of the University of Nebraska-Kearney was named the Receiver of the Year, while Brian Alderson of the University of South Dakota earned Offensive Lineman of the Year. Lance Ancar of the University of North Alabama received the third annual Division II Rimington Award as the division’s top offensive center.

On defense, McFadden claimed Lineman of the Year honors, while John DiGiorgio of Saginaw Valley State University earned Linebacker of the Year and Dan Peters of Shepherd University earned Defensive Back of the Year. Kicker Jeff Glas of the University of North Dakota was named Specialist of the Year.

Terwilliger, a junior from East Stroudsburg, Pa., passed for 4,571 yards and 50 touchdowns in leading the Warriors to an 11-2 overall record and an NCAA-II semifinalist finish. Terwilliger became the first underclassman since the 2000 season (Dust Bonner, Valdosta State) to capture the Harlon Hill Trophy.

Brittingham, a sophomore from Levittown, Pa., led NCAA-II in rushing and scoring in 2005, helping BU to an 11-1 record and an NCAA-II playoff appearance. He rushed for 2,260 yards (188.3 ypg) and 32 TDs and scored 204 points (17.0 ppg).

McFadden, a junior from Saginaw, Mich., recorded 83 tackles with 21 tackles-for-loss and 19.0 quarterback sacks. He also recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass for the Lakers.

This marks the 18th year Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, a recognized authority on small college football, has selected an NCAA Division II All-America team. The national publication selected All-Region teams with the first-team and second-team All-Region players from each of the four geographic regions (Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest) making up the national ballot, which was voted upon by a 25-member national panel.

A total of 155 players earned some form of Football Gazette All-America honors. Players from 68 of the 150 football-playing schools in Division II earned Football Gazette All-America accolades. A pair of NCAA-II playoff qualifiers – North Alabama and North Dakota – led the way by placing three players apiece on the first-team All-America squad.

Peters, who led all NCAA divisions with a dozen interceptions, was a first-team selection. Six West Virginia Conference players were named to the honorable mention squad. Dervon Wallace of Shepherd, who established a league record with 25 touchdowns for the 11-1 Rams, and Charleston FB Niko Edwards were offensive picks. Charleston DE R.K. Carrick, Concord LB Darryl Wilson, Fairmont State LB Matt Vance, and West Liberty State S Ian Whittington were honorable mention defensive selections.
