Charleston 76, Wheeling Jesuit 63 Box Score
(CHARLESTON)---Charleston avenged their lone conference loss of the season with a 76-63 victory over Wheeling Jesuit in the first semifinal of the WVIAC Women's Basketball Tournament. Courtney Thomas led a balanced UC (27-2) attack with 17 points. Laura Kinsler added 15 points and Rachel Pike had 14. The Golden Eagles held a 44-30 rebounding edge, reversing a minus-16 margin in the 73-69 regular season loss at Wheeling. The Cardinals (26-4) received a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds out of senior Sarah Setcavage.
Glenville State 69, West Liberty State 52 Box Score
CHARLESTON --- Rachel Redick (Franklin, Pa.) and Casey Taylor (Sinks Grove, W.Va.) netted 20 points each to pace Glenville State to a 69-52 victory over West Liberty State in the semifinals of the WVIAC Tournament, Friday afternoon at the Charleston Civic Center. The Pioneers will play Charleston, Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
Glenville, which improved to 28-1 overall, also saw senior Denae Dobbins (Glenville, W. Va.) post a double double with a 19-point, 16-rebound, 3-block effort against the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty State opened the scoring with a three-pointer by Lena Kalvana (St. Petersburg, Russia), however, the Pioneers took the lead for good at 4-3 with back-to-back layups by Redick and Dobbins. Leading 26-21 with 6:27 remaining in the first half, GSC built on its lead by closing with a 13-5 run to take a 39-26 lead at intermission.
The Hilltoppers, who fell to 24-6 overall, closed to within 10 at the 18:21 mark, but couldn't get any closer. Kalvans was the lone player from West Liberty to crack double digits with 13 points, while Charity Street added nine.
With the victory, the Hilltoppers advance to their seventh-consecutive conference title game. Glenville, which fell to Wheeling Jesuit in the 2005 tournament finale, will be looking for its first league tournament title since 2003. Saturday's title game features the fourth and sixth-ranked teams in the Division II ranks. Charleston handed the Pioneers their lone loss of the season, 85-77, January 26 in Glenville.
