Baseball: WVU Takes First Game Against St. Peter's

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team scored at least 10 runs in a game for the fourth time this season en route to a 10-4 win over St. Peter’s on Friday, March 10, at Hawley Field in Morgantown, W.Va.

The Mountaineers (9-3) sprinkled their runs across the scoreboard; scoring two runs in the second, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. WVU was tough defensively, allowing the Peacocks (1-8) to only score four runs on 10 hits.

West Virginia struck first in the second inning when shortstop Tyler Kuhn belted a triple to right center field that scored teammates Casey Bowling and Adam White from second and first base, respectively.

The Peacocks took the lead briefly in the fourth inning on a trio of runs. With runners on second and third, SPC batter Santo Maertz knocked a single to right field to knot the game. Kevin Kallert came to the plate next and doubled down the left field line to score Maertz.

The Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs knocked in by White and Kuhn. In the bottom of the sixth inning Austin Markel scored on a throwing error and White hit a sacrifice fly to score Bowling from third.

WVU padded its lead with two runs in the seventh inning on RBI from Markel and Bowling.

An inning later the Mountaineers would put the game away with another pair of runs in the eighth. White scored on a wild pitch by Jose Pinto and junior third baseman Justin Jenkins recorded his third home run of the season as he crushed a 400-foot shot to straight away center field.

Jenkins ended the game with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Kuhn led the offense with three RBI on the afternoon. The Louisville, Ky., native went two-for-three at the plate including a triple and a stolen base.

Kenny Durst got his second win of the season on Friday to remain unbeaten as he went five innings. The lefthander from Pt. Pleasant, W.Va., allowed five runs on seven hits, while striking out four.

Junior Trent Ridgley came in and pitched a career-high four solid innings of relief aginst St. Peter’s. The Massillon, Ohio, native allowed just one run, while recording a career-high five strikeouts and the save.

The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they host St. Peter’s in a doubleheader.
