CHARLESTON – Lisa Lee (Charleston, W.Va.) and reserve Emily Jones (Brecksville, Ohio) each netted 20 points to lead second-seeded University of Charleston to a convincing 81-59 victory over top-seeded Glenville State in the finals of the WVIAC Women's Basketball Tournament, Saturday evening at the Charleston Civic Center. The Eagles receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The Eagles, who improved to 28-2 on the season, took the lead for good at 7-6 on a jumper by Rachel Pike (Madison, Ohio) with just over 16 minutes in the first half. Leading 24-21, Charleston put the game away with a 15-6 run to close the half and take a comfortable 39-26 advantage into intermission.
Glenville State, which fell to 28-2, could only manage to get as close as 47-35 in the second half with a mini 4-0 run, however, the Eagles countered with 15-5 run to put the game away. Charleston built the lead to as many as 25 points on two occasions – 76-51 and at 81-56.
Charleston converted over 50 percent of its shots from the field, including an 8 for 9 effort from Jones. Lee, the league's player of the year and tournament MVP, fell one rebound short of posting a double double. The senior also had three assists, two blocks and four steals in the victory.
The Pioneers had three players reach double figures in the loss. Rachel Redick (Franklin, Pa.) paced the squad with 17 points, while Casey Taylor (Sinks Grove, W. Va.) and Denea Dobbins (Glenville, W. Va.) added 16 and 11 points, respectively. Taylor hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The victory marked the first time Charleston claimed a tournament title since the 1998 event in which the Eagles dumped Alderson-Broaddus 85-75 in overtime.
