PROVIDENCE, R.I. – West Virginia’s Kevin Pittsnogle and Mike Gansey were named to the all-Big East first team, selected by league coaches and announced today by the conference. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Pittsnogle and Gansey join four unanimous first-team picks in Villanova guards Allan Ray and Randy Foye, Marquette forward Steve Novak and Connecticut forward Rudy Gay.
Others named to the first team were Eric Hicks of Cincinnati, Chris Quinn of Notre Dame, Aaron Gray of Pittsburgh, Quincy Douby of Rutgers and Gerry McNamara of Syracuse. A total of 11 players were selected for the first team due to a tie in the voting.
Pittsnogle led West Virginia in scoring with an average of 19.4 points per game. The 6-foot-11-inch senior shot 48.8 percent from the floor during the regular season and made a team-best 78 3-point field goals.
Gansey shot 56.3 percent for the regular season and averaged 17.4 points per game. The 6-4 forward shot 44.2 percent from 3 and grabbed an average of 5.6 rebounds per game. Both were recently named finalists for the John R. Wooden Award presented to the college basketball player of the year and Gansey was also named one of 10 finalists for the Oscar Robertson Award, also presented to college basketball’s best player.
It is the first time that West Virginia has ever placed two players on the all-conference first team in the same year. The school’s last first team all-Big East pick was forward Calvin Bowman in 2001.
Making up the 10-man second team were Hilton Armstrong and Marcus Williams of Connecticut, Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert of Georgetown, Donald Copeland and Kelly Whitney of Seton Hall, Louisville’s Taquan Dean, Pitt’s Carl Krauser, Providence’s Donnie McGrath and Villanova’s Kyle Lowry.
Devan Downey of Cincinnati, Wilson Chandler of DePaul and Dominic James of Marquette were unanimous all-freshmen selections. Joining them on the 11-man all-freshmen team were Connecticut’s Jeff Adrien, Pitt’s Sam Young, Marquette’s Jerel McNeal, Providence’s Sharaud Curry and Geoff McDermott, Rutgers’ J.R. Inman and Anthony Farmer and Syracuse’s Eric Devendorf.
Big East player, coach and freshman of the year will be announced on Tuesday.
