Bee's Morris just keeps going and going

Bee's Morris just keeps going and going
Only one player was in the game for all 36 minutes Wednesday morning when No. 5 Fairmont East upset fourth-seeded Beckley in overtime.

Senior guard Ashley Morris.

"She's like the Energizer Bunny," Bees' Coach Bill Malone said.

The point guard scored only four points but committed just one turnover against the Flying Eagles' defensive pressure.

Fairmont East won the school's first State Tournament game with a 64-62 decision.

YOU CAN pardon St. Joseph Coach Shannon Lewis if he was feeling a bit older than usual Wednesday night.

You see, opponent Charleston Catholic is coached by Ashley Shepler, who used to play on a summer travel squad Lewis coached.

"She was a tremendous player, and she is going to be a really good coach," Lewis said. "She did a nice job."

Shepler's Irish won 43-40.

TUCKER COUNTY was no pushover for second-seeded and No. 2-ranked Wheeling Central in a 49-37 afternoon Class A quarterfinal, and Mountain Lions Coach Tom Carr seemed to like everything his team took from the game -- except defeat.

Carr pointed out that the Mountain Lions "get 95 percent of our scoring from underclassmen (and 35 of 37 points from freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the quarterfinal loss)."

The Tucker coach felt good despite even though his team was outscored 10-0 in the final four minutes, and 20-5 in the fourth quarter, when Central's size and savvy showed.

"I think maybe we also came to the realization that we're not that far from being, maybe in the top four or five (in Class A)," Carr said. "I mean, we beat No. 3 (East Hardy) last week (in the Region 2 final), and we just played No. 2 in what was a 12-point game, but realistically, it was a four- or five-point game, I thought.

"You hate to say a ‘quality loss' in a State Tournament game, but this season's over as of 15 minutes ago, so looking to next season, I think we can compete on a state level."

ATTENDANCE ON the first day was pretty good considering only one local team, Charleston Catholic, was in action.

The day session drew 2,600 and the evening 2,423.

Attendance for the day session would have been higher and the Tucker County student section fuller had it not snowed in that area Tuesday night.

By Wednesday morning, there was 3 inches of snow on the ground in Hambleton.

With school canceled, the school buses could not be used to transport the students to Charleston.

IT DID not help St. Joe any on the court but the school produced a first class media guide for its team's first State Tournament appearance.

It included game-by-game results and notes along with player biographies and coach's comments on each player. There were also several pages of useful statistics.

There were five pages of "game notes" supplied to everyone in the media that included several interesting tidbits and updated player statistics.

* * *

CHARLESTON CATHOLIC ruined one of the more interesting of those St. Joe notes by beating them on a Wednesday.

Up until then, St. Joe was 10-0 in games played on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. That included a 2-0 Wednesday record.

In games played on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, St. Joe was just 6-6.
