MORGANTOWN — Figuring out that Bob Huggins was coming on board now seems like the easy part, even if West Virginia officials remained steadfastly and peculiarly quiet on the subject deep into Thursday night.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Although Kansas State appreciates what Bob Huggins accomplished in his single season as the Wildcats basketball coach, officials at the school clearly weren’t happy with his decision to bolt so soon and accept the coaching job at West Virginia.

On the subject of Bob Huggins’ hiring as West Virginia’s new basketball coach, a random sampling of baseball fans at Appalachian Power Park Thursday night showed a keen awareness of Huggins’ background.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan desperately wanted to hire John Beilein and was willing to make him the highest-paid basketball coach in school history.

Thompson, Kurpel lead Valley past Pendleton
Josh Thompson went 3-for-3 and drove in six runs and Travis Kurpel fired a three-hit shutout Thursday as Valley rocked the state’s No. 1 Class A baseball team, beating Pendleton County 13-0 in Smithers.

Chelsea Cobb fired a one-hit shutout and struck out 19 Thursday as host South Charleston blanked Hurricane 7-0 in prep softball.

Nick Canterbury allowed one earned run and scattered six hits in his first start of the season as host South Charleston downed Capital 12-2 in a six-inning, mercy-rule win in high school baseball Wednesday.

WVU-Auburn part of Big East-SEC Invite
West Virginia will play Auburn at 7 p.m. on Dec. 5 in Birmingham, Ala., as part of the Big East-SEC Invitational college basketball event. Georgetown meets Alabama at 9:30.

SA boys, GW girls win track titles
St. Albans’ boys and George Washington’s girls came away with the team championships Thursday during a chilly Sam LeRose/Stan Smith Memorial track meet at Laidley Field.

As the cold evening wore on, West Virginia Power scoring opportunities were slipping away, and the folks in attendance were maintaining a steady trickle toward the exits. On an opening night diminished by freezing temperatures and bitter winds, the Power compounded the unpleasantness by stranding too many runners through six innings. The fans simply surrendered to the cold.

Bartrum to receive alumni honor from Marshall
Former Marshall University football standout Mike Bartrum will receive the school’s distinguished alumni award at the 70th annual Alumni Awards Banquet on April 21 in Huntington.

On Monday, after arriving in Charleston from spring training, West Virginia Power left-hander Brae Wright made a quick visit to Appalachian Power Park, where he and his teammates will spend the summer.
