Mavericks ace signs with Bluefield College

Forensics was as important as fast-pitch when Alexa Carter was looking for a college. The left-handed softball pitcher has a good chance to do both at Bluefield College, which led to a signing ceremony Monday afternoon at Lansdell Hall.

As a James Monroe High School Maverick, Carter has struck out 56 batters in 42 innings pitched in the weather-hampered season so far, allowing 23 runs.

Taking a broader view, she’s been the primary pitcher for three years in high school, all of which resulted in sectional championships.

Alexa’s father and coach Lee Carter said, “She’s endured tough times and good times, both. We’ve been sectional champs for three years while she’s been a starting pitcher. Her record is more wins than losses.

“But the good thing is, she’s had to be a leader. And I think she can bring that leadership to Bluefield College and help this school out..”

Alexa Carter said she’s worked hard at pitching “since fourth grade, maybe.” Her favorite pitch is a fastball, low and inside. A lot of the game “is just mental,” she said. “That’s most important.”

She has learned from others on the softball diamond, too. “My freshman year, Adrienne Upton was a pitcher for the varsity, and she made it look really easy, so I looked up to her a lot,” Carter said.

Shady Spring’s Mandy Parkulo was another talent who influenced her, she said.

Her senior season stats show 13 hits in 27 at-bats but she’s far from satisfied. “My batting isn’t great, but I’m working on it,” she said.

She seemed very satisfied Monday with her choice of the private college on the state border.

“I’m really nervous, but I’m excited at the same time. ... I like the size of the school. Since day one, they’ve known me on a name basis. I think I can learn a lot here.”

Coach Russell Hill, whose Lady Rams have nine freshmen this year, said, “The thing we like most about Alexa is that she’s a very strong student. She kind of typifies the student-athlete that we’re looking for.

“And of course, her pitching qualities are going to help us, also. ...

“You can never have enough good pitching on the college level. We’re hoping she can come in and step right in and help us from the mound some.”
