SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Johnny Dawkins, a longtime assistant coach at Duke, has been hired as Stanford's new men's basketball coach.
Dawkins replaces Pac-10 Coach of the Year Trent Johnson, who left for LSU earlier this month, two people close to the situation said Saturday. Both people requested anonymity because Stanford had not made an official announcement, which could come as soon as Monday.
The 44-year-old Dawkins was an All-American at Duke and has been on the coaching staff there since 1998.
Stanford reached the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001, losing to Texas. The Cardinal face the loss of twin 7-foot sophomores Brook and Robin Lopez, who both declared themselves eligible for the NBA draft.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians starter Jake Westbrook is expected to miss at least one month with a muscle strain in his lower back, an injury the team initially figured would keep him out only for a few starts.
Westbrook hurt himself while throwing a pitch to Minnesota's Mike Lamb last Saturday. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 2.73 ERA in four starts.
Westbrook received a cortisone shot in his back Friday.
Indians trainer Lonnie Soloff said the timetable for Westbrook's recovery changed because the symptoms of his injury persisted for a week since he got hurt. Soloff said the injection seemed to help Westbrook.
Soloff also said closer Joe Borowski will begin playing catch on Monday. Borowski has been out since April 15 with a strained triceps muscle and is expected to miss one monthCHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina sixth man Danny Green declared for the NBA draft Saturday but will not hire an agent.
The forward from North Babylon, N.Y., announced his decision one day after Associated Press player of the year Tyler Hansbrough said he would return for his senior year but teammates Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington indicated they would enter the draft pool without agents.
That leaves open the possibility of returning to the Tar Heels.
Coach Roy Williams said Green and his father approached him in the 24 hours after the decisions of his teammates were announced and "indicated they wished to test the waters."
Green averaged 8.1 points and 3.9 rebounds during his first three seasons at North Carolina and ranked second with 56 3-pointers this season in helping lead the Tar Heels to the Final Four.
