MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior swimmer Nick Delic and volleyball senior Kailee Goold have been selected as the recipients of the 2008 Red Brown Cup, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding all-around student-athlete. The Red Brown Cup encompasses the student-athlete’s athletic, academic and civic achievement. The WVU Athletic Council voted this year to annually award the top male and female student-athletes.

A native of Avon Lake, Ohio, Goold helped the Mountaineer volleyball team to a 16-14 overall record in 2007, an improvement of 13 victories from the previous season. A member of Pi Sigma Alpha and Golden Key International Honor Society, Goold has also been a teacher’s aid at Eastview Elementary and Bay Village High Schools.

A four-year letterwinner, Delic garnered six All-America distinctions during his Mountaineer career, the first coming after his 13th-place finish in the 100-breast stroke and as a member of the 200-freestyle relay in 2006. In 2007, he earned All-America honors as a member of the seventh place 200-free relay team, and honorable-mention honors for his contributions on the 11th place 400-free relay, the 16th place 200-medley team and on the 11th place 400-medley relay team. The sixth place Mountaineer baseball team looks to secure a bid in the upcoming Big East Conference post season tournament as it hosts Louisville for a three game series this weekend.

WVU fell to 11-10 in conference play as it was swept at St. John's last weekend. Louisville will come to town playing it's best baseball of the season. The Cardinals have won nine in a row and they are two spots ahead of WVU in the standings. Louisville will begin the weekend at 13-8, tied with Seton Hall for fourth place.

"Neither team has a playoff spot secured yet," WVU head coach Greg Van Zant pointed out. "This is our final home series, so we want to win it and solidify our spot (in the playoffs.) We don't want to have to go to Cincinnati next week having to win that series to get in."

The Mountaineers will start Josh Whitlock in game one of the series Saturday. Van Zant says the rest of the rotation for the weekend is to be determined. West Virginia and Louisville will play a double header Saturday starting at 3 p.m. Saturday is dollar day at Hawley Field as admission and selection concessions are just $1. The series concludes with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

Louisville is a team that reached the college world series last year.

"They've got most of their pitching back," said Van Zant. "They do have a lot of new position players. Their big third baseman (Chris Dominguez) is back. We have heard their catcher (veteran Derek Alfonso) broke his hand and has been out for a while. The best information we have on that is that he could be back for the Big East tournament."

The Mountaineers are down to their final seven games of the season. The next four are at home. The Louisville series will be followed by a non conference game against Youngstown State Monday night. Then it's the final series of the season at Cincinnati next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

West Virginia State Baseball Team Awaits Regional Assignment

The West Virginia State baseball team will find out it's regional assignment Monday. The Yellow jackets captured the school's 16th WVIAC tournament championship last weekend to grab the automatic bid to the Division II NCAA tournament. The regional site and the first round pairings will be set early next week.

The Yellow jackets are 36-12 which is a suprise to veteran coach Cal Bailey.

"We didn't know we had the talent to be a championship team," Bailey admitted. "We had only one returning starter from last year's team. We brought in guys that we thought would play certain positions. The way it ended up, only one guy is playing the position we brought him in to play. Most of those guys are playing but they are at other positions.

"Pitching wise, we brought in a lot of young guys and a couple of junior college guys. One of the junior college pitchers ended up being our starting left fielder and our #4 hitter. "

"It took us about 20 games to get things squared away. But we are 20-2 in our last 22 games. We are getting good pitching and good hitting and we are fielding the ball. Things just came together ."

West Virginia State is currently ranked second in the North Atlantic Regional behind 41-14 West Chester. 35-13 Concord is third with Pitt Johnstown fourth, Shippensburg fifth and Kutztown sixth.
