The three page letter signed by W. Marston Becker, Chairman and CEO of Max Capital Group, Ltd., Peter Kalis, Chairman and Global Managing Partner of K&L Gates, Arizona Diamondbacks Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick, Jr., Michele McNeill, retired President and Founder of Kern McNeill International and Robert Reynolds, the retired Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Fidelity Investments was sent to the Secretary of the Board of Governors Tuesday.
They say they deplore recent events at WVU. "Yet President Garrison's reaction has been to insist he will continue to serve. To what end?" the distinguished alumni ask.
The letter criticizes Garrison's report that he gave to the Board of Governors last Friday. "The administration of President Garrison now seeks creatively to rationalize its actions and inactions by discrediting the degrees of 70 other WVU students and, in the process, exposing WVU to an accreditation review."
The group says WVU's reputation in the world of public and academic opinion has been materially harmed.
The letter also criticizes the Board of Governors and its statement last Friday in support of Garrison. The distinguished group says WVU must be "pried from the grip of those who co-authored and condoned the 'failure of leadership' noted by the independent panel."
Becker, Kalis, Kendrick, McNeill and Reynolds say Garrison must resign or be removed from office, the university placed in the hands of an interim president and a new search take place.
The letter concludes, "Most importantly, the Board of Governors must undertake a thorough self-assessment---beginning with its flawed and politicized search to select David Hardesty's successor---to determine how WVU was allowed to get to this sorry state under its stewardship."
The group also says the BOG should appoint a leading independent investigator to review the events since former President Hardesty announced his plans to step down.
The WVU Academy of Distinguished Alumni is made up of graduates "who have attained national or international distinction in their profession or discipline."
