An autopsy is expected to be performed today to help determine the cause of death of a 20-year-old wrestler who collapsed during a match at Mt. San Antonio College over the weekend.

Jesus "Jesse" Cruz, a Covina resident who attended Rio Hondo College, was slammed by an opponent during a tournament Saturday in the college gym and possibly landed on his head, said Capt. John Kades of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

Cruz was unresponsive when taken to San Dimas Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Kades said.

Kades said although the autopsy will probably be performed today, most likely a final determination on Cruz's death will take several weeks as toxicology and other tests are carried out.

Kades said in someone so young, a full testing will probably be ordered, "unless there is something very obviously wrong."

Rio Hondo College President Ted Martinez Jr. called Cruz "the epitome of the ideal student-athlete."

"In addition to be an excellent student who maintained a high GPA, he was a community college All-American, captain of the RHC wrestling team and a superb leader," Martinez said.
