Panthers, Beavers run, throw to state berths

CHARLESTON — A dozen PikeView Panthers and five Bluefield Beavers are headed to next Friday’s state track meet after qualifying in the Class AA, Region III meet held on Friday at Laidley Field in Charleston.

Good things came in fours at the regionals. PikeView High School had three students qualify in four events each, and Bluefield High had four first-place finishes.

PikeView senior Mariah Farley was first in the 100-meter high hurdles (16.65 sec.) and second in the 300 hurdles. She scored 27.5 points for the girls team, which came in second out of 10 schools. Shady Spring was the top girls team.

Chelsea East scored 21 points, finishing first in the 1,600-meter run (5:34.40) and second in the 800 run.

David Keen, who scored 20.5 points for his team, was first in the long jump (20 ft. 5 in.) and second in the 400-meter run. The boys finished sixth out of 11 teams; Oak Hill was first.

Bluefield’s Montel Leggett was part of three first-place finishes. He won the 100-meter dash (11.61 sec.) outright. He and teammates Trey Williams, Chevez Burress and DJ Flack were first in both the 4-by-100-meter and 4-by-200-meter relays (45.8 sec. and 1:34.59 respectively).

Senior Keith Ferguson was tops in the shot put with a toss of 47 ft. 1/2 in.

Williams qualified for the state as well by finishing second in the 200-meter event. He was fifth in the 100-meter dash and may yet qualify based on times recorded in other regions. The top three in each regional final, plus the next four fastest times overall in the state will comprise the field at the state level.

PikeView qualifiers included Laura Hill, second in the 1,600-meter race, and Jasmine Johnson in the shot put.

In team events, three PikeView girls units qualified with third place finishes — in the 4-by-100 relay (East, Lacy Dart, Emilee Comer and Stevi Thomure), 4-by-400 relay (Amanda Presley, Hill, Comer and Thomure) and shuttle hurdles (Presley, Comer, Thomure and Farley).

Two boys teams from Pike-View qualified. Both were manned by Jordan Nelson, Keen, Will Austin and Tyler Farley. The 4-by-100 team came in third and the 4-by-200 unit was fourth.

Farley finished second in the boys’ pole vault (8 ft. 6 in.) and received a ribbon, but did not make the state event in that category due to a newly-adopted statewide minimum qualifying standard.

Dale Mitchell qualified for several regional finals but he was unable to compete in the finals due to pain related to a previous hamstring pull.

The state track meet is also scheduled for Charleston’s Laidley Field.
