Concord's Stoots, Watts, and Lee lead the Mountain Lions on the Field.
Today, Saturday September 2nd at 1:30pm Concord University kicked off their 2006 season against South Atlantic Conference opponent Wingate. Wingate began the game with a strong kick return taking the ball past the 50 but Concord held the Bulldog's offense to 3 yards as they went 3 and out. After a bad punt Concord took over on the 25 yard line but they also went 3 and out as these two offenses were trying to figure out the other team's defense. But on the next series the Bulldogs had a 10 play, 4 minute and 57 second touchdown drive and with 6:45 left in the first quarter Wingate led 7-0. Concord opened up their next drive with a 26 yard hookup between Jared Palazzola and Ron Buskey. But the drive stalled and the Mountain Lions had to punt back to the Bulldogs. But the Concord defense held strong as the first quarter winded down and the score at the end of the first quarter was 7-0 Bulldogs.
As the second quarter started the Mountains Lions began on their own 43 yard line after a 14 yard pass completion from Palazzola to James "Tank" Tunstall to end the first period. But after a sack the Mountain Lions had to punt for the 3rd time of the game. After a pass interference call against Concord the Bulldogs moved into Mountain Lion territory. As the the Bulldogs moved to the Concord 11 yard line, but from there Ola Adams stepped in front of pass and intercepted the ball in the end zone, giving a fresh breath of life for the Mountain Lions. But on 3rd and 5 for Concord Jared Palazzola's pass was picked off and returned for a touchdown. Now with 9:17 in the second quarter the Bulldogs lead 14-0. On the next drive the Bulldogs passed in for their third touchdown of the game leaving the Mountain Lions down 21-0 with 6:44 to go in the second. Concord couldn't find any luck on the next drive as Jared's pass went off the shoulder pads of Buskey and was intercepted. Then Wingate went onto score taking the lead 28-0 with 4:56 left in the second quarter. After a couple of punts Concord began with the ball on 32 yards line with 1:25 in the second quarter. But the Bulldogs held the Mountain Lions and the score at the half was the 28-0 with Wingate in the lead.
Concord on the Move
Concord was set to receive as the 2nd half started, looking to rebound from the first half. After a kickoff out of bounds the Mountain Lions took over on the 35 yard line. After 3 incomplete passes the mountains were forced to punt once again. The Bulldogs muffed the punt but recovered the fumble on the 10 yard line, giving Zach Boyd a 51 yard punt. After backing up the Bulldogs deep into their own territory Wingate was forced to punt the ball back to Concord. Back and forth the offenses started as Concord had to punt back to the Bulldogs and then the Bulldogs had to punt back to Concord. There was then 7:58 in the 3rd quarter as Concord looked to drive in for their first score. Tank opened up the drive with a 12 yard run. Then a pass to Greenwood set up a 2nd and 2, and Tank once again runs the ball for 4 yards as Concord put together a string of first downs and had a drive going. Then on second down Palazzola hooked up with Kareem Royal for a 56 yard touchdown pass and Concord had there first score of the game. Concord however missed the PAT wide left, making the score 28-6. Wingate began the next drive on the 30 yard line After a Concord blitz, Wingate slipped through the defensive line and ran for a 43 yard touchdown and with 3:43 left in the 3rd quarter Wingate led 35-6. Wingate once again kicked the ball out of bounds and Concord began the drive at the 35 yard line. Concord was faced with a 4 and inches on their own 45 and Tank busted through the line for a five yard gain. Concord's offense now had something going, but with the forth quarter winding down and the new time rules the clock was now a problem. At the end of the 3rd quarter the score was Wingate 35 and Concord 6.
Concord began the 4th quarter with a 3rd and a long one, and Tank once again busted through for 10 yard gain. On a 3rd and 9, early in the 4th quarter Palazzola hooked up with Dustin Greenwood for a 31 yard touchdown pass. The drive consisted of 10 plays covering 61 yards, with a 31 yard touchdown. Concord was back in business now down 35-13, but the clock looked to be an issue for the rest of the game. Concord wasted no time as they kicked an onside kick and got the ball back with 13:23 in the fourth. Concord began driving once again as Will Little picked up a first down on 3rd and 1. But Concord was faced with a 4th and 10 and with little only 10 minutes left in the game had to go for it. The pass intended for Dustin Greenwood feel incomplete and the Bulldogs took control with 10:16 left to go in the game. After a 4th and 20 for Wingate turned the ball back over to the Mountain Lions on Concord's own 25 with only 6:07 left in the game. But Concord had to punt it back to Wingate and the fourth quarter was winding down. Then Concord's Ola Adams once again stepped in front of a pass at the 33 yard line giving the ball back to Concord. Concord opened up with a 19 yard reverse by Dustin Greenwood followed up by a 15 yard personal foul face mask on the Bulldogs. But with only 2:07 left Concord looked like they were going to run out of time. A fourth down incompletion finalized the game making the final score Wingate 35 and Concord 13. Concord will be back in action at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV at 1pm, taking on Tiffin University.
