Seth McClung is impressing manager Joe Maddon with his work as the team's closer, but he won't be handed the 2007 job.
"I love what he's doing," Maddon said. "He's showing me he can be that man. But we're not going to ordain anybody from a month's worth of work, because I think that's what's happened here in the past. And we can't do that anymore." At the very least, McClung looks the favorite for saves with the Rays in 2007 and in all likelihood, he'll have to pitch his way out of the job.

Seth McClung notched his sixth save with a scoreless ninth Saturday against the A's.
McClung has four saves and a victory in his last five appearances. He shouldn't have to worry about losing save chances to Edwin Jackson or anyone else.

Tampa Bay is trying to make arrangements for Seth McClung to pitch winter ball in Venezuela.
The team wants him to get more closing experience, but is wary of finding a situation where he won't be overused by the Venezuelan club. Either way, it looks like the Rays are warming to the idea of McClung as their long-term closer.

Seth McClung pitched a perfect 10th inning with a two-run lead against the White Sox today for his third save.
McClung has been charged with one run over 8 1/3 innings in his last nine appearances. His case for remaining the Rays' closer the rest of the season is strengthening.

Seth McClung took a loss against the Orioles on Sunday after yielding one run in the ninth inning.
McClung entered in the eighth with a runner on second and one out. He struck out Kevin Millar, then intentionally walked Corey Patterson before unintentionally walking Brandon Fahey. Ramon Hernandez then stepped to the plate, but fouled out to the catcher to end the inning. In the ninth, a one out single from Nick Markakis and a walk from Melvin Mora set up Miguel Tejada to drive in the winning run. Tejada redeemed himself for hitting into his AL-leading 26th double play of the season by singling to right to score Markakis on a headfirst slide. McClung hadn't allowed a run in his last six appearances, so his job is safe for now.

Seth McClung nailed down his second straight save Tuesday.
It was not without its drama, as McClung loaded the bases on back-to-back singles and a walk, but he induced a flyout from Michael Young to finish it off. McClung needs to be seriously explored as a fantasy option right now.

Seth McClung pitched a scoreless ninth Monday against the Rangers for his first career save.
He allowed just an infield single in his inning of work. McClung should get practically all of the save chances for the Rays until he stumbles. He's worth grabbing in all formats.

Seth McClung gave up a game-winning grand slam to Richie Sexson after entering Tuesday's game in the 10th inning.
McClung got charged with three runs in a game in which he only truly faced two batters, one of whom made an out. McClung took over for Shawn Camp after Ichiro led off the 10th with a double. A sac bunt advanced the runner, and Rays manager Joe Maddon chose to walk Adrian Beltre and Raul Ibanez to lead the bases for Sexson, who hit a grand slam. McClung clearly didn't do his job tonight, but the Rays were asking for this when they put him in a situation in which he was forced to throw strikes. This shouldn't be held against him as he attempts to win the closer's role.

Seth McClung picked up a relief victory by retiring all four Tigers he faced on Thursday night.
McClung's first relief appearance of the year couldn't have gone much better. He replaced Jae Seo with one on and two outs in the seventh and got the final out of the inning. He then pitched a perfect eighth before making way for Brian Meadows, who allowed a double and a walk before picking up the save in the Rays' 2-1 victory. McClung will probably replace Meadows in the closer's role in the coming weeks.

The Rays plan to initially use Seth McClung in the eighth inning as a setup man for Brian Meadows.
Expectations are that McClung will move into the closer's role for the final month of the season, if not much sooner. He's worth owning in fantasy leagues.

Devil Rays recalled RHP Seth McClung from Triple-A Durham.
McClung might not close over Brian Meadows right away, but manager Joe Maddon has said he intends to plug him into that role at some point. He's worth picking up in all formats.

Rays manager Joe Maddon indicated Sunday that he sees Seth McClung becoming his team's closer before the end of the season.
Brian Meadows would be pushed back into a setup role. McClung will probably be recalled from Triple-A within the next week or so.

Seth McClung struck out two in a scoreless inning Sunday to earn his third save for Triple-A Durham.
McClung has a 1.98 ERA and a 24/2 K/BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings since his demotion last month. It shouldn't be long before he's back with the Rays as a reliever, and he might get a chance to close next month.

With Tyler Walker (elbow) out for the season, the Devil Rays may recall Seth McClung to help in the bullpen.
"Could be," manager Joe Maddon said. "We'll see how well he's doing." A former starter, McClung has converted to closing at Triple-A and has pitched relatively well so far. Since someone has to get saves in Tampa Bay, he has some fantasy potential.

Seth McClung pitched two perfect innings Saturday in his first relief appearance for Triple-A Durham.
He struck out two. McClung is going to serve as Durham's closer for at least a couple of weeks. He could be in the Tampa Bay pen shortly after the All-Star break.

Devil Rays optioned RHP Seth McClung to Triple-A Durham.
The Rays intend to try McClung as a closer at Triple-A, so if you were still holding on to him in an AL-only league, don't let him go now. In fact, it might be a good idea to pick him up in AL-only leagues in which he's unowned. If McClung pitches well at Durham, the Rays will likely give him a chance to close after the All-Star break.

The Rays are planning on sending Seth McClung to Triple-A, according to the Tampa Tribune.
The paper believes the Rays will shift Tim Corcoran into the rotation and call up Edwin Jackson to pitch out of the bullpen. As poorly as Jackson has pitched, it's hard to see why the Rays would give him an opportunity now.

Seth McClung took his 10th loss of the season after yielding six runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Phillies today.
McClung put five nice starts together at the end of April and beginning of May, thus giving AL-only leaguers some hope. However, he hasn't posted a quality start in any of his last six outings and his ERA stands at 6.81. The Devil Rays don't exactly have much in the way of better options and they have nothing to lose by sticking with him, so he'll probably remain in the rotation anyway.

Seth McClung lost a fifth straight start after giving up six runs -- five earned -- in four-plus innings versus the Tigers.
McClung allowed just one run until the fifth started with three singles, a walk and a double. Both runners he left on came around to score, and the Rays ended up losing 7-1. It's possible that McClung will be removed from the rotation, though with Jamie Shields already up, there aren't currently any pitchers the Rays are dying to promote.

Seth McClung fell to 2-8 after giving up five runs -- four earned -- in 5 1/3 innings against the Angels on Wednesday.
McClung had an excellent five-start run last month, but he's lost each of his last four outings. It's possible that the Rays will send him to the pen to make room for Casey Fossum. The alternative would be to demote Doug Waechter.
