Bridgeport Survives Jefferson In AAA Quarterfinal

In an exciting game that came down to the last shot, Bridgeport defeated Jefferson 64-61 to move on in the Class AAA tournament.

The Indians were led by Bryant Irwin, scoring a game high 34 points and constantly answering the Cougars with clutch shot after clutch shot. After Bridgeport fell behind by seven less than two minutes into the final frame, Irwin and the Indians kept their composure and grabbed back the lead after Irwin sank two free throws with under five minutes to play.

After an Indians steal on the Cougars ensuing possession, Irwin ignited the Bridgeport crowd with a dunk for a three point lead with 3:34 left to play.

After back and fourth baskets by each team, Jefferson inched to within one point but it was Irwin again establishing a three point advantage with a turnaround jumper. With 1:02 left in the game, Bridgeport was clinging to a one point lead. Game Recap

Williamstown Moves On In Class A

After trailing for the entire game, Williamstown hung in and with 5:18 left to play the Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the ballgame to take the hard fought 53-45 victory.

Matt Kiger’s three point play gave Williamstown the lead at 43-40 for their first advantage.

With just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame’s Daniel Menendez tied the game at 45 apiece and the game would remain that way until the 1:06 mark. Zac Badgley then put Williamstown up for good hitting two free throws.

With just 44.8 ticks to play, Ben Angotti fouls Badgley who hit one of two free throws with Kiger gobbling up a huge offensive rebound on the miss and Badgley is fouled again, hitting only one of two for a three point Yellow Jacket lead with just over 30 seconds left. Game Recap

Charleston Catholic Cruises Past Beckley

Charleston Catholic left no doubt which team would be advancing to the semifinal round in the Class A Tournament by opening a huge lead against Beckley in the first quarter and running away with the victory.

The Irish led from tip off until the final buzzer and in the first quarter jumped out to a 10-2 lead just five minutes into the game. By the end of the first, Charleston had built a 23-12 advantage and they were just getting started.

Charleston’s Bo King then put things even farther out of Beckley’s reach dominating a stretch of the second period that would put the Irish up 40-19 at the half. King’s first jumper put Charleston up 27-12, then back to back three’s and another layup with a foul for good measure essentially ended the game right there as King put the Irish ahead 36-17.

In the second half the Irish played consistent basketball matching any attempt Beckley made at mounting a comeback. Charleston ended the third quarter up 57-36 before coasting through the fourth period to earn the win.

King led the Irish with 21 points and 13 rebounds with Joe Sassler adding 16 buckets. Greater Beckley was paced by Robert Rogers with 18. Game Recap

Tucker County And Bishop Donahue Square Off

After building a sizeable halftime lead, Bishop Donahue turned back any Tucker County momentum taking a 63-47 victory to advance in the Class A quarterfinal game.

Leading 33-14 at the break, the Bishops never held a leader smaller than eight for the rest of the game and at one point built a 20 point advantage. Tucker did get within 10 twice in the fourth period but each time the Bishops immediately scored to deflate any momentum for Tucker.

Huntington Breezes Past Fairmont Senior

The Highlanders easily advanced past Fairmont Senior as expected with a 103-39victory to get a step closer to their third straight Class AAA championship.

O.J. Mayo and Patrick Patterson didnt disappoint with several highlight dunks and impressive passes to push Huntington into the semifinals. After the first quarter, Huntington had taken a 20-6 lead with Mayo and Patterson each contributing 8 points.

Gilbert Controls Buffalo to Advance To The Class A Semis

After regaining the lead at 3:28 of the first quarter, Gilbert never trailed the rest of the way and defeated Buffalo 66-44 to move on to the Class A semifinal game.

It was not a cake walk for the Lions as Buffalo hung around for most of the night but Gilbert was able to maintain a sizeable advantage to hold off any Buffalo comeback.
