Huntington Wins Third Straight AAA Title


Huntington earned their third straight Class AAA Championship in impressive fashion defeating South Charleston 103-61 to bring home the title.

The Highlanders dominated early and often and O.J. Mayo had another superior performance scoring 41 with 11 assists and 10 rebounds. In the first quarter Patrick Patterson won the opening tip and quickly scored the first points of the game 20 seconds in and the Highlanders were off and running.

Wyoming East Downs Logan For Class AA Title
Wyoming East showed why they were the number one seed in the Class AA State Tournament taking a 61-49 victory over Logan to earn the title.

The margin of victory was not indicative of the game as the Wildcats played with Wyoming the entire contest until the Warriors made their move with 4:56 to play in the fourth.

Charleston Catholic Throttles Bishop
Charleston Catholic left no doubt who the best team in Class A is obliterating Bishop Donahue 83-40 to claim the State Tournament title.

It was Charlestons game from the start as the Irish built a huge first quarter advantage and easily went on to win the championship. The Bishops fell behind 7-2 to begin the game and was able to close to 9-7 two minutes later. That was the only time it was close the entire afternoon as the Irish was about to explode.

Game Headlines: Day 3, March 16, 2007


SC Advances to Class AAA Finals
Prior to Friday night's Class AAA semi-final between South Charleston and Morgantown, much of the talk centered around what South Charleston would not have. With a handful of Black Eagles being suspended for the remainder of the State Tournament, many in the Charleston Civic Center wondered if they would be able to keep up with Morgantown fielding just a nine-man team. While the Black Eagles were missing some players, they certainly weren't missing sophomore guard Aaron Dobson. At the end of the game, the only question left regarding the Black Eagles is whether they can upset two-time defending champion Huntington on Saturday night.

Wyoming East Wins Thriller Over Winfield
With each day of the tournament getting more tense, Winfield and Wyoming East matched the best games of the tournament with the Warriors getting the better of the Generals with a 59-58 victory.

With the win, Wyoming moves on to play Logan for the Class AA Championship on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Huntington Advances To Class AAA Championship
Playing the helpless victim for the Highlanders today was Bridgeport who was in the game at tip off but as expected Huntington easily cruised to 98-59 victory. With the win, the Highlanders advance to Saturdays Class AAA Championship game against the Morgantown/South Charleston winner.

At the end of the first quarter, Huntington had jumped out to a 27-11 lead and with O.J. Mayo scoring 3 points and Patrick Patterson adding 6. To start the second, Chris Early got into the action hitting a jumper and a three to up the lead to 35-13.

Bishop Stuns Undefeated Gilbert In Class A
Gilbert's undefeated season came to a thundering halt as #5 seed Bishop Donahue ended the Lions run with a rousing 72-64 victory to advance to the Class A Championship game on Saturday at noon.

The game came down to the fourth quarter and the Bishops came up big in crunch time after tying it up 61 all with 3:50 to play. By the 1:12 mark, Bishop had built a five point lead and played suffocating defense down the stretch to hold off any Lion rally.

Logan Takes Down Magnolia To Advance
In a very physical game that was closer than the final score would indicate, the No. 3 seed Wildcats defeated No. 7 Magnolia 63-49 to advance to the Class AA Championship against the Winfield/Wyoming East winner.

In the end, it was Logan hitting the clutch shots while the Blue Eagles couldnt buy a basket in the closing minutes of the game. Magnolia was consistently stopped inside and couldnt convert at the line as the Wildcats started to pull away.

Charleston Catholic Dominates Williamstown
In what many expected to be a tight game between #2 seed Charleston Catholic and #3 seed Williamstown, didnt amount to much of a contest with the Irish dominating from the first quarter moving on to defeat the Yellow Jackets 67-45.

With the win, Charleston will face the Bishop/Gilbert winner on Saturday at noon for the Class A Championship.
