Kanawha Valley trio earns AA All-State honors

Kanawha Valley trio earns AA All-State honors
Winfield High didn't get a Class AA girls basketball state championship this season. No one had more players on the 2006-07 All-State team than the Generals, however.

Winfield star juniors Katie Cloxton and Brittany Lee were named today to the All-State first team by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. They were joined on the eight-player squad by another Kanawha Valley star -- Sissonville guard Kaitlin Snyder.

One other area player made the first team -- Clay County 5-foot-9 senior center Meghan Cole

The Class AA all-State team is captained 6-1 junior center Jolysa Brown, who led Summers County past Winfield and to the 2007 State Tournament championship.

Ritchie County (19-6) also has two All-State first teamers in 5-9 senior guard Kelly Spangler and 5-9 senior forward Samantha "Sam" Crouch. Frankfort's Jenn Cessna rounded out the team.

Cloxton, Spangler and Cessna were repeaters on the first team.

Cloxton, a 5-6 junior guard, averaged 15.4 points, nine assists and four steals for the 20-6 Generals. She sank 51 three-point goals.

"She's just a great offensive player,'' Winfield Coach Paul Sutherland said. "She can shoot probably eight feet beyond the three-point line. You have to focus on Kate, and that opens up things for other players.''

Lee, a junior forward, averaged 15.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, four assists and five steals. She electrified the state tournament with a 33-point, 16-rebound performance in the semifinals against Ritchie County.

"Brittany is one of the hardest players to match up with in any class,'' Sutherland said. "She's 5-foot-11 and we can play her at point or post her inside.''

Snyder, a 5-6 sophomore guard, averaged 15 points and 4.7 assists for the Indians (20-4), who fell to Winfield in the regional final.

"By far she's the strongest, fastest point guard in the state,'' Sutherland said. "You can't stop her.''

Cole scored 18.4 points per game and contributed 7.7 rebounds and three steals for the other tournament semifinalist, Clay County (20-6). Cole will play at Concord University next season.

"Meghan wants the ball at all times,'' Panther Coach Mary Ramsey said. "She can shoot the three as well as play inside. She comes to play.''

Brown became the dominant Class AA center in the state this season, averaging 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, steals and assists as she led Summers to a 26-2 record and the state tournament championship.

"My teammates really encouraged me a lot,'' Brown said. "I knew in the future I'd have an important role with the team, so I worked hard to get better.''

Her older sister, Sierra, now a freshman forward at Concord University, was a two-time All-State player.

"Jolysa saw how hard work paid off for Sierra and other players in our program,'' Summers Coach Wayne Ryan said. "She got a little hungry, and once she got that bug, she continued to develop as a player.''

Spangler averaged 16.5 points, 4.6 assists, 7.1 rebounds and 2.8 steals. Her father, Rebels Coach Terry Spangler, called her one of the best passers around.

"All Kelly needs is one dribble and she can make a nice pass the length of the floor,'' he said.

Crouch averaged 14.2 points, 3.5 steals, 3 assists and 6.1 rebounds.

"Sam's a competitor,'' Spangler said. "Our defense makes our offense, and it goes as Sam goes.''

Cessna, a 5-7 guard-forward, averaged 17 points, four assists and three steals in leading Frankfort to a 16-8 season.

Cessna became Frankfort's all-time leading scorer with 1,506 points.

Her sister and future West Liberty teammate, Julie, held the school's record with 1,430 points.

Alycia Bell from Magnolia captains the AA second team, which also includes Summers County's Jenni Wynes, Sissonville's Tori Ball, Tyler Consolidated's Megan Wiseman and Cameron Yoho, Emily Daniel from Shady Spring, Becky Robinson from Tolsia and Ravenswood's Kylie Wolfe.

The third team features Emily Blevins from Summers County, Courtney Bunner from Ritchie County, Winfield's Kelsey Griffith, Clay County's Sierra Carver, PikeView's Laken Coburn, Bluefield's Stephanie Wallace, Chelsea Holcomb from Lincoln and Kori White from Logan.
