The Heart of the Matter
Facing temptation is part of the Christian life, and until the Lord returns we cannot
escape it. The temptations fathers face are not greater than those faced by other
followers of Christ, but the realization that we have sons and daughters watching
us, learning from us, and depending on us intensifies both the battle itself and our
commitment to overcome temptation.
Discovering the Way
1. Material Pursuits
We’re tempted to let toys take the place of time.
2. Emotional Energy
We’re tempted to save the best for the workplace and give our families the leftovers.
3. Verbal Messages
We’re tempted to lecture rather than earn the right to be respected by first listening
and learning.
4. Personal Desire
We’re tempted to be perfect and expect perfection from our children.
5. Sexual Drive
We’re tempted to seek intimate satisfaction outside of marriage.
6. Spiritual Legacy
We’re tempted to underestimate the importance of cultivating a spiritual appetite in
our children.
Starting Your Journey
How successful are you in facing these temptations? If you want an honest answer, ask
your wife. She’ll jump at the chance to help you become a better man, husband, and
father.
