Final Friday Of Regular Season In The Books

All that’s left now is for the WVSSAC computers to do their work and spit out the final high school football rankings.

The last Friday of the regular season is in the books, and there were a few surprises along the way. Losses by Parkersburg South (6-4) and Princeton (6-4) could knock both out of the Class AAA playoff field of 16, leaving the door open for Fairmont Senior (6-4) and St. Albans (6-4), both of whom won Friday.

In Class AA, Grafton (5-5) appears to have played its way into the playoffs with a win over Nicholas County, and now Liberty (Raleigh)(6-4), Winfield (5-5) and Ravenswood (5-5) will all hold their breath, because depending on how the bonus point situation works out, one of them will be left out of the 16-team field.

In Class A, Clay-Battelle (8-2), Madonna (8-2), Midland Trail (7-3) and Wheeling Central (6-4) all needed victories to secure their spots in the playoffs, and each came up with wins on Friday. The hard-luck story is apparently Montcalm (8-2), which posted its best record in years and was rated 16th heading into the final weekend. Montcalm was idle this Friday, but that didn’t mean it couldn’t lose ground, as a 19-18 victory by No. 17 Tucker County (7-3) over Philip-Barbour will apparently vault the Mountain Lions over Montcalm and into the last playoff berth in Class A.

The WVSSAC will release all the pairings for the upcoming playoffs on Sunday, Nov. 6. The first round of the playoffs will be held the weekend of Nov. 12-13, as the No. 1 seed plays No. 16, No. 2 plays No. 15, No. 3 plays No. 14, etc., in each of the three classes. The higher seed earns the right to host each game, while the lower seed gets to pick between three time slots – Friday at 7:30, Saturday at 1:30 or Saturday at 7:30. The West Virginia high school playoffs will run for four rounds. The first three rounds will be played on the home field of the higher seed (or a field of their choosing), while the Super Six finals on Dec. 2-3 will be played at Wheeling Island Stadium.
