MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team resumes non-conference play Wednesday night taking on Robert Morris at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers (2-1) have won back to back games after starting the season with a 57-54 loss to Texas San Antonio in the UCF Golden Knights Classic in Orlando, Fla. In West Virginia’s most recent win against Fordham last Saturday junior Meg Bulger led six double-digit scorers with 19 points. Bulger overcame a poor shooting start in her first two games against UT San Antonio and Central Florida. Bulger hit 7 of 13 field-goal attempts against Fordham while also pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior center Yelena Leuchanka is leading the team in scoring (16.7 ppg.) and rebounding (13.3 rpg.) while coming off the bench. Leuchanka has begun the year with three straight double-doubles in points and rebounds to start the season – a WVU first since Maria Tchobanova did it in 1999. Bulger is averaging 14.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while sophomore center Olayinka Sanni is averaging 12.0 points and 3.3 boards per game. West Virginia coach Mike Carey is expected to start Ashley Powell (1.7 ppg., 5.0 apg.) and Britney Davis-White (7.3 ppg., 3.0 rpg.) in the backcourt. Davis-White is coming off a season-best 13 points in the Fordham win. Sophomore forward Chakhia Cole is expected to join Bulger and Sanni in the starting frontcourt. Cole is averaging 7.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Robert Morris (2-1) has a pair of wins over Loyola, Ill., and Youngstown State and a loss to St. Francis, Pa. West Virginia downed Robert Morris 77-43 at the Coliseum the last time these two teams met in 2004. Bulger can become the 23rd player in school history to reach 1,000 points for her career with 28 points Wednesday night against the Colonials. Tip off for the Robert Morris game, to air on the Internet via CSTV All-Access, is 7 pm. |
