MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Dan Leatherman scattered five hits and two runs over seven innings to help West Virginia to a 9-2 home-opening victory over Niagara in game one of a double-header Tuesday afternoon at Hawley Field.

The right-hander struck out three and walked three in running his record to 3-0 for the season.

West Virginia’s big inning came in the fifth when Justin Jenkins ripped a grand slam home run over the left center field fence in a five-run inning. Jenkins, who finished the game 3 for 4 with two runs scored, has hit home runs in each of his last two games.

Doug Nelms and Austin Markel knocked in a pair of runs for the Mountaineers, now 7-3 on the season. The Mountaineers had eight hits for the game.

Andrew MacDonald had a pair of hits and a run scored for Niagara, now 3-7. Purple Eagles starter Kyle Nicoletta was pinned with the loss, his first, allowing three runs on four hits in three innings of work.
