MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team hosts the St. Peter’s Peacocks (1-7) for a four-game series this weekend on March 10-12, at Hawley Field.

Game one will start at 3 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday will feature a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game is also scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

WVU (8-3) is off to its best start since 1998 when it opened the season 8-2-1. The Mountaineers’ early season success can be largely attributed to the performance of the pitching staff. The staff has a team ERA of 3.48 in 11 games this season, while the offense has outscored its opponents 81-45.

Last time out, WVU took a pair of games from Niagara at Hawley Field. Junior right-handed pitcher Dan Leatherman (3-0) pitched a complete seven-inning game in game one of a doubleheader with Niagara on Tuesday. Leatherman allowed five hits and two runs in WVU’s 9-2 win over the Purple Eagles.

In game two, the WVU offense was on display as the Mountaineers hit three home runs en route to bringing 17 runs across the plate. Preseason all-BIG EAST shortstop Doug Nelms hit two home runs and had six RBIs, both career highs. Potomac State transfer Joe Stupka (2-0) earned the win in seven innings of work. The junior right-hander from Pittsburgh, Pa., allowed four runs on five hits while striking out seven as the Mountaineers cruised to a 17-4 victory, completing the sweep of Niagara.
