Lady Pioneers Blast Barton In NCAA Opening Round

Lady Pioneers Blast Barton In NCAA Opening Round

The #2 seeded Glenville State College women's basketball team opened play in the NCAA East Region of the NCAA II national tournament against #7 seeded Barton (NC) College on Friday night in Charleston, WV. The Lady Pioneers received plenty of motivation via their opposition from comments made in an article in the Wilson Daily Times on Thursday, February 9, 2006. In that article, various members of Barton's women's basketball program felt the Lady Pioneers were a "good match-up for us (Barton)." For further insight into the article written by Jamie Hodges of the Wilson Daily Times, visit their website by clicking here.

Regardless, the match-up wasn't much of one as the Lady Pioneers dominated the game in every facet on their way to an easy 79-52 victory. The Lady Pioneers led 42-26 at intermission. The victory moved the Lady Pioneers to 29-2 on the season, matching a program season high for victories.

For the game, Rachel Redick scored 26 points, 22 of which came in the opening half, to lead the Lady Pioneers. Denae Dobbins, the lone Lady Pioneer senior, recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 blocks. Dobbins was the leader of the Lady Pioneers' stingy defense that allowed Barton's Lady Bulldogs to shoot only 27% from the field.

"I'm pleased with how we played," stated Lady Pioneers head coach Steve Harold. "We played hard and got them on the boards, which is one of their strengths."

The Lady Pioneers meet Anderson in the NCAA East Regional semifinals on Saturday night at 8:00pm. The two last met in the 2004 East Regional semifinals, which was held that year at the University of California -Pennsylvania. The Lady Pioneers just got by in that contest, 72-71, in the only meeting between the two programs.
