MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – David Phelps pitched seven strong innings and designated hitter David Mills knocked in three runs to lead Notre Dame to an 8-4 victory over West Virginia Friday night at Hawley Field in Morgantown.

Phelps fanned 10 and scattered three runs on seven hits to improve to 5-3 on the season. Mills finished 2 for 5 and was one of three Irish players to record more than two hits for the night. Third baseman Greg Sherry was 3 for 3 with a run scored hitting in the ninth slot in the lineup.

Notre Dame (24-9-1, 11-2) plated two runs in the second after WVU starter Josh Whitlock walked a pair to start the inning. Brayden Ashdown’s ground out to short plated Jeremy Barnes and Ross Brezovsky scored on Sherry’s single up the middle.

The Irish added another run in the third when Even Sharpley homered to center, his eighth of the year.

Notre Dame expanded its lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the fourth before West Virginia got on the board when Austin Markel singled in Jedd Gyorko, who led off the inning with a double. Vince Belnome also scored when Phelps was called for a balk.
