HBO to revisit Pirate drug scandal
HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” features a story tonight at 10 that will tear off a festering scab from the wounds of many already embattled Pittsburgh Pirates fans and detail the delayed healing process of two of the principal figures in baseball’s 1985 drug scandal in Pittsburgh.

Forfeits possible for unbeaten Matewan
A Matewan High School football player was held out of Saturday’s football game after his eligibility came into question, but it wasn’t immediately known Monday whether he was ruled ineligible or if the Class A school had to forfeit any games.

Nitro downs Cross Lanes Christian
Garrett Coleman and Matt Marshall each scored two goals for Nitro Monday in a 6-3 boys soccer win against Cross Lanes Christian.

Here’s a look at some of the leading candidates for the Kennedy Award, which goes to the top high school football player in the state as voted on by members of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. This is not intended as the definitive list; players are added and deleted as the season progresses. Players are listed in alphabetical order:

  • Carter DeVault, East Fairmont, QB — Week: 5-of-20 passing, 25 yards, one interception in a 24-6 loss to Morgantown; 16 carries, 53 yards, one TD. Season: 27-of-59 passing, 626 yards, 12 touchdowns, three interceptions. Team record: 3-1
