Seniors Rachel Redick and Casey Taylor combined for 51 of the Lady Pioneers 70 points to lead Glenville State to a 70-62 win over Ashland on the final day of the Edinboro Classic. The win moves the Lady Pioneers to 8-2 overall, while Ashland falls to 7-6.
The Lady Pioneers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before Ashland used a 14-4 run to take a 14-10 lead at the 14:32 mark. The teams then battled back and forth in a tightly contested first half as the teams were knotted up at 29-29 with 1:18 to go. The Lady Pioneers then used a 7-0 spurt to close the half and take a 36-29 lead into intermission.
The Lady Pioneers used a 10-2 run to open the second half to bring their lead to 46-31 with 17:17 to play. The Lady Pioneers continued to hold a double digit lead for much of the second half as they led 62-52 still with 7:00 to play. Ashland then began to gradually chip away and eventually trimmed their deficit to four at 66-62 with just more than one minute to play. The Lady Pioneers would then score the game's final four points and pick up their eighth win of the season.
As a team, the Lady Pioneers struggled shooting as they converted only 39% of their field goal attempts. They did, however, outrebound Ashland 42-29 in the contest. Additionally, the Lady Pioneers forced 22 turnovers in the game.
Individually, the Lady Pioneers two-headed monster was two much for Ashland. Casey Taylor led the Lady Pioneer charge with 26 points and nine rebounds. Rachel Redick chipped in with 25 markers and seven rebounds. Freshman Melanie Oliver was the only other double figurer scorer in the game with 12 points. She added seven rebounds as well.
The Lady Pioneers will return home and prepare to open their WVIAC season at Alderson-Broaddus on January 6, 2007.
