HUNTINGTON -- Parkersburg and East Fairmont found themselves tied for the lead Saturday night going into the championship round in the 60th West Virginia High School Wrestling Tournament at Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
Jordan Nolan, one of seven finalists for the Parkersburg Big Reds, met Parkersburg South's Tyler Green for the title at 103 pounds. Nolan posted an impressed 15-2 victory in the opening match of the finals and put Parkersburg ahead to stay. The Big Reds finished 3-for-4 in the title round and totaled 201 points to capture the Class AAA championship, their first since 2004 and 20th overall.
|
East Fairmont, which went 1-for-6 in the finals, settled for second with 192 points.
"It was huge," Parkersburg coach Scheny Schenerlein said of Nolan's victory. "He came out and wrestled. That's what Big Red wrestling looks like. Our kids wrestled with confidence. Nolan's win may have put them under the gun more."
Cabell Midland had a championship performance by Chris Miles in the 145-pound weight class. Miles beat East Fairmont's Mason Bailey, 3-2, to atone for a one-point loss in the WSAZ Invitational finals.
Parkersburg's other champs were Brandon Wilson at 130 and Andy Thomas at 189. His win locked up the crown for the Big Reds. In the fall, Thomas was quarterback/free safety on the school's state championship football team.
"Kids like that come along once in a while. We're fortunate to have him," Schenerlein said. "That sour taste in our mouth (from not winning since 2004) is gone. It's going to be fun taking this home tonight."
In Class AA/A, Oak Glen continued its dominance, but coach Larry Shaw wasn't smiling. The Golden Bears totaled 168.50 points to set a state record for any high school sport in West Virginia by winning their 11th consecutive championship. Runner-up Point Pleasant had 86.50 points.
Anthony Jeffers from Point Pleasant was the champion at 152. Jeffers defeated Braxton County's Kevin Tanner, 10-4.
The downer was Oak Glen went 0-for-5 in the finals. The last time the Region I champions didn't have an individual champion was 1996. The last time a state champion failed to have an individual winner was Wheeling Park in 1978.
"We got handled, that's all," Shaw said. "We didn't wrestle with very much emotion."
Shaw said it will take time for the Golden Bears, who were assured the team crown after Friday night, to rejoice over the achievement.
"Eventually. Not tonight," Shaw said. "I said all along we were overachievers. We were not able to finish it off. Maybe the kids relaxed a little bit after they clinched the title last night. Give credit to the kids we wrestled."
The streak breaks a tie Oak Glen shared with the Parkersburg boys tennis team, which won 10 straight state titles from 1976 to 1985. Earlier this month, the Fairmont Senior boys swim team took its ninth consecutive state championship.
For East Fairmont, Zach Morton got the only title at 119 pounds.
"Our kids are great warriors," said Bees coach John Geary, who was voted coach of the year. "They gave a valiant effort. Hats off to Parkersburg. They're a great team. We'll come back tougher next year. We won't be able to sneak down here anymore."
Thomas, along with Musselman's Dustin Haislip at 135 and Nitro's Seth Easter at 140, won their third state title. Haislip was voted outstanding wrestler.
Thomas beat East Fairmont's Morgan Murphy, 5-2, in the title match.
"I don't care if I win by a lot of points," said Thomas, who did not lose an in-state match this season. "You win, you don't care how. I'm a lot happier I got the win that locked it up. Two team titles. A heck of a year. This is going to be a good night. It's time to celebrate."
Shaw was voted coach of the year and outstanding wrestler in Class AA/A went to Calhoun County's Cody Clark, champion at 119
