Mayo, Patterson get top honor

HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High's O.J. Mayo and Patrick Patterson are the ninth set of teammates ever named as boys basketball McDonald's All-Americans in the same season.

Mayo, the top overall player in the Class of 2007, and Patterson were named to the 12-player East roster on Saturday evening and will play in the McDonald's All-American Game on March 28 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky.

There will also be the Powerade Jam Fest slam dunk and three-point contests on March 26 at Bellarmine College in Louisville and an awards banquet on March 27.

"They're both very deserving," Huntington coach Lloyd McGuffin said. "They are both tremendous players and really hard workers. This is just proof that all the hard work they've put in has paid off."

Patterson echoed that.

"It's a real honor," the 6-foot-8 power forward said. "Tons of great players have played in the McDonald's game, and it's an honor to make it."

Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) and Dunbar High School (Baltimore) are the only other schools to ever have more than one player selected to the game in the same season.

Oak Hill achieved the feat five times with Corey Alexander and Ben Davis in 1991; Chris Davis and Martice Moore in 1992; former North Carolina teammates Jeff McInnis and Jerry Stackhouse in 1993; Rashaad Carruth and DeSagana Diop in 2001; and Rajon Rondo and Josh Smith in 2004.

DeMatha Catholic did the same twice -- N.C. State tandem Sidney Lowe and Derek Whittenberg in 1979; and Keith Bogans and Joseph Forte in 1999. Dunbar had Donta Bright and Michael Lloyd in 1992.

Three other Huntington High teammates -- seniors Chris Early, Mike Taylor and Jamaal Williams -- were also among the 2,500 nominees for the McDonald's All-American Game.

"We're really proud of that and all the things we've been able to do that no other team from this state has done before," Patterson said.

Mayo was in Cincinnati on Saturday visiting friends, Huntington assistant coach Arkel Bruce said, and could not be reached for comment.

The Huntington High players were both previously selected to the Jordan Brand All-American Classic to be played April 21 at Madison Square Garden in New York City and the Nike Hoops Summit on April 7 in Memphis, Tenn. NCAA rules limit amateur athletes to only two all-star games, but the Nike Hoop Summit does not count toward that total because the players selected will actually play in a game against foreign high school-aged all-stars.

Mayo averaged 29.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game this season and signed to play at the University of Southern California.

Patterson averaged 17.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 4.1 blocks and is the reigning West Virginia state player of the year. He was named as the Mountain State Athletic Conference player of the year on Monday. Patterson is still undecided between Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Virginia.
